I always create with an eye toward what I think is beautiful, so it’s usually hard to let go of my pieces.  But this one, oh, this one!  I think I will cry and eat ice cream when it goes.  I love it.  I love everything about it.  I love the layers of black wire and black seed beads with interesting black vintage beads scattered throughout.  I love the peace dove in the cameo and the companion dove adding assymetrical surprise and interest.  Here’s the background story:

When I was a little girl, one of my mom’s friends would tell stories to my sister and me about the lady who lived on Warehouse Mountain–a mountain we saw everyday from our home–and about wood-dwelling animals doing things and having adventures.  We loved her stories because she made most of them up, and the stories always reflected what was going on in our small world.  One particular story involved a dove bringing light to Alaska’s dark winters by putting stars into snow-covered spruce trees.  We don’t have white doves in Alaska, so I remember being entranced by the miracle of a sun-white dove carrying a brilliant white star against the black sky and black spruce trees dusted with sparkling snow.  To this day, it’s one of my favorite memories, and now it’s in a necklace!

This one is special.  I can’t wait to see where it flies!

Winter is my favorite time to run.  Partly because the air is carrot-crispy and fresh, partly because there are fewer people on the trails, partly because snow cushions each footfall, but mostly because I get to wear fleece headbands.

Fleece headbands are the greatest not for their 1982 fashion sensibilities, but for their virtue in keeping my iPod earbuds/phones/whatever in my ears.  I think there’s something wrong with my ears.  I cannot keep earbuds/phones/whatever in them.  It’s like the earbuds/phones/whatever have opposite polarity to my ear canal and, inevitably, the ear-whatevers fall out just as Tone Loc is really getting funky.

I find this annoying.

So, viva fleece headbands.  Now where are my slouchy socks and legwarmers?

There is no school today!  Too icy!  Woo-hoo!

I love school cancellation days.  I glory in them!  I dance upon the couch!  I remember singing the praises of a canceled day to another adult once who was horrified that a teacher would be so pleased by a day without those children.  You know, because teachers do it for the love, right?  Aren’t the students my reason for being?  My inspiration?  The joys of my life?  The very meaning for my soul?

Well, no.  Not really.  I teach middle school.  Those children are 12 and 13.  Ick.

Seriously, where did the idea that teachers are sainted people who adore their jobs?  I mean, I wouldn’t show up if I weren’t getting paid, and I definitely appreciate the days where I don’t have to show up.  And in total seriousness, the attitude that teachers live to teach harms my salary potential.  Why should my school district worry about paying me a competitive wage if they’ve got me on heart anyway?

But none of that matters today BECAUSE THERE IS NO SCHOOL!

I’d go back to bed, but I’ve got next week’s lesson plans to write…

Cold, cold, colder…

The bathtub drain froze yesterday.  The laundry drain is frozen today.

This follows the coldest summer on record.

This is not fun.

Hawaii, take me now.
